For a couple with a child, there's no better base for a holiday in Italy's heel than Trullo Santo Stefano. This property was immaculately renovated in 2006, leaving it cool and tastefully furnished. Outside the area is peaceful, and naturally shaded amidst lines of large olive trees standing guard, as they have for decades, in the chocolate-brown earth. The brand-new kidney-shaped pool (which measures 8.80m x 4.80m x 120m), is overlooked by the furnished gazebo - two of the many great features of this trullo. There is great attention to detail, with fabulous niceties, such as a tomato patch beyond the gazebo from which guests may pick their own.

The main entrance opens into the beautiful multi-arched sitting/dining room, which has a kitchen corner and an open fireplace to keep cosy in the winter months. The main feature of this room is however the fabulous conical ceiling, unique to the region of Puglia. The kitchen is well equipped with oven, gas stove, sink, and fridge/freezer. Other facilities in the trullo include a shower room with WC and a washing machine. The accommodation comprises of one wonderful double bedded room with an extra single bed located in a niche. The roof of the bedroom is conical and there is a door onto the terrace, in order for you to make the most of the beautiful outside space. Outside, a beautifully paved patio leads round to an outside shower, the swimming pool and a purpose-built barbeque. Access to the property is off a quiet secondary road behind electric gates up the short private driveway with ample parking.

San Michele Salentino, Puglia

All the essential shops, banks and chemists are to be found in the small, typical Pugliese town of San Michele Salentino, 6 kilometres distant.

Twenty eight kilometres away is the south of Italy's best kept secret - the charming town of Martina Franca. Here, the 18th century white houses have gloriously Baroque doorways and windows, rounded wrought-iron balconies festooned with flowers, and there are great views over the Itrian valley.

Why Holiday in Puglia?

Puglia is Italy's boot heel, its Southeastern most region.

If you have already toured the northern part of Italy and are looking for something equally fascinating, completely different and much less crowded, this is a wonderful area to consider. It offers at least one excellent archeological museum, a host of cathedrals dating back to the 10th century, several deserted - and thus highly atmospheric - Greek and Roman ruins, a gleaming necklace of lively fishing villages, one of Europe's largest forests, a chain of medieval hill towns, and some of the very cleanest beaches and water in the Mediterranean. It also has its own subspecies of architecture, called barocco leccese. Characterized by extremely ornate carvings that cover the entire surface of churches and palazzi, its apex is reached in the delighttful little city of Lecce.

There is one other attraction that you will see only in Apulia, and that is Trulli (singular, “Trullo”). Whitewashed cones made of stones held together without mortar, they are visible in almost every wheat field and olive grove, where they serve as miniature barns. But they are at their most picturesque when clustered together in the hundreds, to form a town. This is Alberobello, and it's a wonderful site you will never forget.

The region is served by direct flights to the region's two main airports at Bari and Brindisi.
