Indeed, 'large', 'solid', and 'grand' are adjectives that spring to mind when first approaching it from its long private driveway. The separate sitting and dining rooms, the latter resplendent with revolving dining table incorporating the family coat of arms, are reminiscent of medieval dining halls, complete with high windows, a gallery, and vaulted ceilings and columns. The grounds are naturally shaded by numerous pine trees and the land is indeed like Africa. However, appearing oasis-like, down an avenue of trees, are the two private swimming pools, one small for children, the other very large and overlooked by a covered outside eating area. The owner lives on one side of a pleasantly formal internal courtyard and this is independent from the rest of the house.
The main entrance leads into a hall. Left into the enormous sitting room with open fireplace and beautiful furnishings. There is a formal dining room, off which a corridor leading to the very well-equipped kitchen complete with sink, stove, oven, microwave oven, dishwasher and fridge/freezer. There is also a door leading to the internal courtyard. There is a bathroom with WC, washing machine etc and a second sitting room with doors out to courtyard. The ground floor accommodation comprises of one twin bedded room, two double bedded rooms with en-suite bathrooms and one shower room. From the sitting room, the staircase leads up to first floor landing, where one double bedded room with en-suite bathroom, a second double bedded room, one bathroom, and one twin bedded room are situated.
Outside, the swimming pool (20m x 9m) overlooks a number of 'grotte' or grottoes and rocky outcrops from which Grottaglie takes its name. There is ample parking
Puglia is a beautiful area in south east Italy, which points benevolently at Greece, jutting out into the southern Adriatic. In Puglia, one is never more than 30 miles from the coast, which is interlaced by lively fishing villages, gold-white sandy beaches and dramatic limestone cliffs plunging into a turquoise sea.
Grottaglie is 4 kilometres away from Villa Galeasi, where the essential shops, banks and chemists are found. It is noted locally for its simple yet attractive ceramics. The city of Taranto and the coast are 20 kilometres distant.
Puglia is Italy's boot heel, its Southeastern most region.
If you have already toured the northern part of Italy and are looking for something equally fascinating, completely different and much less crowded, this is a wonderful area to consider. It offers at least one excellent archeological museum, a host of cathedrals dating back to the 10th century, several deserted - and thus highly atmospheric - Greek and Roman ruins, a gleaming necklace of lively fishing villages, one of Europe's largest forests, a chain of medieval hill towns, and some of the very cleanest beaches and water in the Mediterranean. It also has its own subspecies of architecture, called barocco leccese. Characterized by extremely ornate carvings that cover the entire surface of churches and palazzi, its apex is reached in the delighttful little city of Lecce.
There is one other attraction that you will see only in Apulia, and that is Trulli (singular, “Trullo”). Whitewashed cones made of stones held together without mortar, they are visible in almost every wheat field and olive grove, where they serve as miniature barns. But they are at their most picturesque when clustered together in the hundreds, to form a town. This is Alberobello, and it's a wonderful site you will never forget.
