Citta Saint'Angelo, Pescara

Typical view of Citta Saint'Angelo, Pescara This town is positioned on a hill facing the Adriatic sea, not far from Pescara. It overlooks the Saline river valley. The town take its name from Angulus, a centre inhabited by the Italic Vestini people. Cittą Sant'Angelo is a town of important historic interest with Roman ruins and baroque buildings. The old town centre sprawls over the top of the hill and houses several fine medieval churches, including the Collegiate Church of San Michele (13th century), with its 14th century sculpted Gothic entrance. An elegant 15th century portico runs along the side of the church and contains two walled-in marble pluteuses with interlinked crosses. Archaeological finds and sacred statues may be admired in the Civic Museum. An area of the Fino river valley was recently made into a reserve to protect the fragile local ecosystem. During the summer months there are classical music concerts in the main piazza. For an in insight into the history of the region, visit the National archaeological museum at Chieti, housed in the beautiful 19th century Villa Frigerj.
