Testimonies of the most ancient history of the village can be found in Civitella del Tronto where remains from the Neolithic period were discovered.
The fortified citadel, one of its kind in Abruzzo, is located in a wonderful panoramic position dominating the hills below. Numerous medieval and renaissance buildings are preserved in the area enclosed within the town walls.
Via Mazzini and Via Roma, in the town centre, are dotted with elegant mansions, such as the Palazzo del Conte de'Termes, dating back to the XIV century.
The town is dominated by the Fortress, Bourbon bulwark, one of the largest in Italy. Due to the damages suffered through the years, it recently underwent restoration. Among the most noteworthy religious buildings are, the church of San Francesco with its magnificent rose window from the XIV century, a wonderful wooden choir and a silver cross and the church of S. Lorenzo, built in the XVI century.
The territory of Civitella includes part of the Natural Reserve of the Gole del Salinello. Not far from the town is the Hermitage of S. Michele Argangelo, with caves rich in stalactites and stalagmites.
